A courageous advocate is someone who supports, champions and speaks up for a cause that is important and meaningful to them. Courage is needed to persevere and stand up for something or someone you believe in, to make a difference.

At Saint Lawrence Primary School we want to support and encourage our children to become courageous advocates, not just locally but nationally and globally.

At some point in life, we will all face challenges and need support to help us overcome these barriers. At Saint Lawrence, we teach our children that it is important to help others through our school values, no matter who they are, where they come from or what challenges they may face. We teach this through the teachings of the Bible and learning about other courageous advocates. Each year group explores a person across the globe, both past and present, that have faced injustice and overcome barriers in order to help others, instigate change and make a difference through their actions; they are all good examples of courageous advocates. We want to encourage the children to believe that they can also be agents for change.

It is important for our children to appreciate their role as part of the worldwide community; to take responsibility, to be able to look after themselves and foster an understanding of their importance, impact and influence in the world.

We support a range of charities in our local area, nationally and globally, chosen by our school council.  For the academic year 2024/25, we are supporting our local charity 'Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance' and the international charity UNICEF.

In recent years, we have carried out fundraising to raise awareness of issues and support these working for change, including:

• Children in Need

• Fundraising for families in Ukraine

• Sports Relief 

• Cancer Research

• Harvest Festival food collections

• The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
