Year 6

Welcome to the Owls’ Class page – we just love having the responsibility of being the big brothers and sisters to the rest of the school family and see ourselves as role models to the younger children; we wear purple jumpers so we stand out and the other children can always see us.

Being an Owl is quite an exciting time for us – we have reached the last year of primary school so, even though we have to work hard, we have so many exciting opportunities waiting for us. We have a VERY special role in May Day dancing, we are responsible mentoring our mentoring the Robins, we love listening to them read and we take part in many sporting events, representing the school.

Our residential trip (to Castleton in Derbyshire) is a real highlight of the year and is a fantastic experience for us all. We always make the adults so proud of us as they see us facing new challenges and working together to reach new heights (quite literally sometimes!).

Another highlight of being an Owl is getting to perform a summer production, we all have a special role to play and it gives us an opportunity to showcase our wide-range of creative talents. To complete our year, we celebrate with a summer festival, a last hoorah with our school family.

One of our Learning Journeys takes us back to Britain during 1939, where we experience life as a child during World War Two. We consider how this period of history was different for British evacuees and some of the Jewish children living under Hitler’s rule.

During the year, we will be scientists, exploring and investigating light and electricity as well as the human heart. Digging deeper, we will focus on the natural world – considering evolution and inheritance with Charles Darwin as a significant individual to study. We will look at a locality different from our own, thinking about Mexico and its geographical features as well as its history under the Maya Civilisation. To finish the year, we will learn more about the peaks and caverns of Derbyshire in readiness for our visit.

We leave Saint Lawrence’s with a deeper appreciation of the world around us, working closely with charities and organisations means that we have an opportunity to make a difference to a local community and the wider world, but to also understand why these issues occur.

Being an Owl is hard work, but we are passionate about our learning and are so proud of what we can achieve together.

We love to use technology as a tool to support our learning as well as taking part in plenty of creative and collaborative opportunities. We are so lucky to have iPads and Macbooks in our room and have access to the Lego WeDo kits too. Within our maths learning, we like to tackle challenges and solve problems – we love presenting our learning in our own way.

In literacy, we just LOVE to read and we enjoy working in response to a key text. Reading is definitely at the heart of our class family, we our fortunate to have access to an incredible range of fiction and non-fiction books in our class library. If we ever have difficulty choosing a book, we know that our teachers will be there to support us.
